Robert's Comment
for 12/21/04
In 1935 FDR's measures to stimulate the economy
began to take effect. Government spending on public
works, relief and New Deal measures included in the
National Recovery Act stimulated demand by raising
wages and controlling prices. With the defeat of the
NRA by the supreme court FDR continued to work
to raise the purchasing power of consumers with the
aid of legislation that supported unions and minimum
wages. Without the NRA he lost the best means his
government had to control prices. Once certain
industries saw prosperity returning they raised prices
and threw the economy right back in to depression.
It was then FDR went after these profiteers. Holding
companies  were broken up. He forced companies
to open their books in order to determine what
comanies were gouging the consumer. FDR hired
hundreds of lawyers to file criminal indictments
against corporate leaders who operated their
companies detrimental to the public welfare. Today
we have many such comapnies. Why should
americans have to buy phamacudicals from foreign
countries just because our leadership is too corrupt
and too incompetent to do anything in the interest of
the people. Criminal indictments could be made
against the leaders of such companies that would
force them to open their books as FDR did and see
if they are robbing the american consumer. The
government could force such companies to replace
their leadership with leaders who will run their
operations as a not-for-profit entity that serves the
best interest of the american people. This can be
done with any industry or corporation that refuses to
serve the  interest of the american people. The whole
healthcare industry, defense industry, energy
industry, and the tobacco industry are ripe for such
prosecution. Elloit Spitzers office can file such
criminal indictments if the criminals in Washington
refuse to do so.
